This procedure involves inflicting extreme cold to destroy tissue. The following can be treated with Cryosurgery -

Cryopen emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high presssure, which allows us to work with milliletre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing int intracellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thus destroying the cell. This means there is no collateral damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Procedure typically lasts from 5-30 seconds and there is no need for any anaesthetic injection or cream.

How does the Cryopen work?

By rapidly lowering the temperature of the problem lesion, ice crystals are formed and this causes cell destruction.

Could you treat skin cancer (Melanoma, Basal cell cancer) with this?

Cancers need more extensive treatment, hence cryosurgery wouldn’t be appropriate.

What happens after treatment?

A blister forms 2-24 hours after treatment and can take many days to dissolve. A crust is formed once the blister breaks and healing occurs from 1-6 weeks depending on the depth of freeze and size of lesion.

Can the Cryopen be used anywhere on the body?

It should be avoided in areas with delicate/ skin or areas with reduced blood supply. Since cryosurgery can sometimes leave the treated area hypo-pigmented, so care should be taken to avoid areas, which might be cosmetically important.
