We offer micro-sclerotherapy for treatment of thread veins in legs. This is considered to be the gold standard treatment for thread veins, the success rate of which is about 70%. The procedure involves injecting the superficial veins with a chemical solution using a very fine needle. Over time the veins heals and then fade away. Commonly patients need about 3-4 treatments few months apart to see optimum results.

Is the procedure painful?

It doesn’t hurt as treatment is carried out using a very fine needle. Procedure is usually well tolerated by most patients.

How long does the procedure take?

It could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes or longer. It all depends on the extent of thread veins that you want treated.

Are there any side effects?

Adverse reactions are very rare. Although not very common, there is a small risk of injury to the fragile vessel during the injection which can cause matting ( a mat of tiny vessels are left behind which may give the appearance of bruising/redness). This can take up to a year to dissappear completely, if not, sclerotherapy might be an option to treat these tiny vessels Brown marks/ pigmentation might be left behind which is due to leaking of iron from the extravasated blood during the procedure. it can take 6-18 months to fade. Rare side effects include allergic reaction and phlebitis.

Any aftercare instructions?

You would be advised to wear compression hosiery after the procedure. Elevation of legs for a couple of weeks when seated. Avoid waxing legs for a month. You will be given a detailed aftercare advice sheet after the procedure.
